Copywright

The video

3 things I learned about copyright:
1. YouTube can detect when something is copied shortly after someone tries to upload it, because they compare the video with a reference of something they already have in their data file .
2. 20 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube a minute and they have to compare every single one of them.
3. The companies and businesses most of the time will allow the video to be uploaded because of the exposure it gives to them. They will benefit from them because they can put advertising and things on the videos and it can make them more popular.

2 things I agree/ disagree with:
1. I think that companies, businesses, and artists should be more carful about what they allow other people to copy and put on the internet.
2. I think that it can be a good idea to let people upload copyrighted things, because it allows businesses to get new audiences and modernize what they already had.

1 Question I have:
1. Why don't more businesses use the technique of uploading videos to YouTube and make advertising from it?

When I become a teacher....

Reflection: Digital stories are an awesome thing. They give us an opportunity to present information in a different and fun way. It  "gives a voice to a number of otherwise quiet students and students whose skills don't fit the usual academic mold (Ohler, 2005). Students and teachers can have a different way to present their information. The music and the pictures can provide them with a greater understand of the information. The personal part of the story can easily be tied into the educational part. When the students look up the information to make their story they will most likely remember the information better. You can also pair the digital story with a worksheet or paper to make sure they fully understand the concept. It also increases students critical thinking and media literacy. We need to get out of the slump we are in with the same old ways of teaching and make learning fun!

Student digital story- This is an idea of the kind of things I would have my students do using math. It is a fun way to find the slopes of a line and on a graph. The students will have fun learning slopes rather than me getting up in front of the class and just telling them.

WebQuest Reflection

What makes a 'good' webquest?

There are a lot of good and bad webquests out there. The trick is finding one that will help students newly acquired information undergoes an important transformation within learners themselves (March, 2004). Webquests provide open ended questions and use hands on actives for students to learn how to apply what they are learning and thinking about. It is more than looking for information on the computer and making a PowerPoint on it. They learn to participate in a group and put their brains together and do high level thinking. Before the students start the webquest they still have to look up and learn information about what they are going to be working on. the students in the group are role playing different parts in the project. Students will contribute to the real world of learning.

Our Webquest:  The webquest

I think that our reflection is considered a real webquest. Group process: they have to work in groups and use what they all know and come to together and build the cafeteria  If they don't  their measurements will be messed up and it wont fit the requirements that are needed. Individual information: they have to use what they all have learned from the different information they looked up. They will all have different background information that they already know. Use of Internet Sources: They have to use different internet sources that the webquest provided such as, funbrain and smartnotebook. They have to understand how to use them and then apply them to what they are learning to create a model of the cafeteria. If they dont their webquest will not be to scale and it will be messed up.

The introduction draws the reader into the lesson by relating to the learner's interests or goals and/or engagingly describing a compelling question or problem.

1
Cognitive Effectiveness of the Introduction
0 points
The introduction doesn't prepare the reader for what is to come, or build on what the learner already knows.
1 point
The introduction makes some reference to learner's prior knowledge and previews to some extent what the lesson is about.
2 points
The introduction builds on learner's prior knowledge and effectively prepares the learner by foreshadowing what the lesson is about.

the introduction gives a very good idea about what the students will be learning. It lets them know the facts about what they need to know.

WebQuest

WebQuest
Strengths
Weaknesses
Gorillas
Some of the information that the students are finding, is good and helpful to the students. It will take a shorter amount of time to learn a lot of information.

This worksheet has a lot of different parts to it, I will take the students a lot of time to complete. I do not think that all of the information is needed to give the students a good understanding of this topic.
Shakespeare

This project will take a while to do. They are in a group so the students will be able to split up the work. Even though this project will take a while, I think the students will learn a lot of from. They will better understand how things were in Shakespeare's  time period.

I do not think that this site had a lot of weaknesses.
Earthquakes

I think this project is extremely good. It will take a lot of time to do, but students will learn the best structures to make to prevent earthquakes. In the process they are going to learn a lot about earthquakes and how powerful they can be.
This could take a little more time than needed. If a group decides to make their project "perfect" then it will require more time and they aren't spending their time learning but making their project pretty and "perfect".

Country
They will learn a little bit about the country but it will take more time than the project is worth.

This project is going to require a lot of work and time. They are planning a trip to this country. This is going to take more time than needed. They are going to be planning a trip rather than learning a lot of information about the country they are visiting .

Waves and Sound
They will learn a little bit about waves and calculate the wave mass and such.

This project will require a lot of time. It is basically researching and finding information, rather than doing something and learning about it. They are not learning as much information as they should in that amount of time.It will be a lot of busy work that they probably wont remember in the future.

I am the efficiency expert

Which two are the best & why?

Shakespeare and earthquakes. They are hands on. They take more time but they are providing students with a lot of information that they will use in the future.

Which two are the worst? Why?

Country and Gorillas. They students are taking a lot of time to do these projects but they are more busy work than anything. I don't think they will retain a lot of what they learned.

What does best & worst mean to me?

Best means the amount of time spent on the project will equal the amount of information they have learned.
The worst means that they are doing a lot of work for nothing. They are spending a lot of time on it but not learning anything.

Group Discussion: The best WebQuest are group decided on was the Shakespeare. It was very good in every spot. It had a lot of useful information.

The worst WebQuest was the gorillas. It was lacking in every spot. It was not a good WebQuest and it could use some different ideas and changes to make it a lot better.

Story Bird

My Story Bird

Standard 3:
b. Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digit tools and resources to support student success and innovation.

If teachers used Story bird they could complete the teaching standard 3. In our case, the aspiring teachers teamed up with a 5th grade class. We had a partner and we worked together to create a story. We used story bird to do that. It is a neat way to find cool pictures and add words. You can see how creative the kids are and also you can add your creativity. You have to be able to work together with them or else your story will not turn out right or even get finished. It is awesome to see the different ideas that some of the 5th graders came up with.

Why is it important for teachers to engage students in collaborative learning?

I believe that it is extremely important to innovate technology into the classrooms. There are so many jobs and everyday activities that require us to use technology and do different things with it. A lot of jobs are now moving to computers. You have to work together with someone through technology to complete a project. Teaching kids at an early age to work together and use technology will only help them in the future. "Employers rank teamwork/collaboration as one of the three most important applied skills" ("Technology enhanced collaborative," ).  In the future, I believe that jobs are going to become more dependent on technology and teamwork. If we want kids to be successful we need to start bringing more technology into the classroom and teaching them how to work with people. They need to be able to put themselves into someone else's prospective and understand that people work and think in different ways.

How will Edmodo, Skype, or Storybird help teachers?

These are all great websites to use to help teachers innovate collaborative online learning into the classroom. Skype you can connect to different classrooms or even different schools around the country. You can have your students chat with them and even assign a project with a partner. They can talk through Skype and work together to complete the assignment. Edmodo is like Facebook for school. You can have your students post things on the page and get or receive feedback from other classrooms or schools. It will show students that people have different ideas and opinions and they can learn from that. You can share different ideas and thoughts about a lesson or activity. Storybird is an awesome idea you can also bring into your classroom. You can assign your students a partner from another school and they can create a story together. They will have to learn how to think outside the box because the other students might have different ideas or beliefs. Students will start to learn ,through the use of these tools, how to better communicate with people around them to get a project done.  They will also have a lot of fun learning. These are the skills we need to be teaching our kids.

Video Call

The Skype video call addresses Teaching Standard #3.
b. Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation

Skype in schools Blog
In this blog, this person is discussing the reasons why Skype should be in the classroom. They also discuss different things you can do. There are a lot of ways to get the parents involved with the kids to make it better experience for them. They got different countries and school involved also. I think this blog is really good for showing how to use Skype in school and why it is such a great idea!

Reflection on Scratch

Article 1:
Article 2:
Article 3:
How does scratch support the development of 21st century skills?

Quote:  Hobbit, a 14-year-old member of the community explains: "When I think about it, recognition for my work is what really drew me into Scratch. Other things played a part, but the feeling that my work would be seen is what really motivated me" (Monroy-Hernández & Resnick, 2007). This is a quote from an student that has worked with Scratch, she really enjoys it and it has made learning fun for her. She will remember what she is learning and not just forget about it. There will also be more jobs that are computer and design related and this is helping kids start the basics of this. They will understand how to work and use design.
Students will also gain an understanding of mathematical and computer knowledge and start to understand the importance of it in everyday life. Even if they don't grow up to be a programmer or work with math, it teaches them and helps them better express their creative side.
It will also help with their critical thinking and communication skills. These are both very important in the 21st century. They will run into problems and have to figure out how to fix them or have to communicate with someone to work on a problem. When they create a project they also have to think about their audience. They have to think about how other people will react to their projects, which is another important skill to have.
Scratch is a very useful site, that will continue to help to prepare the 21st century kids. If more teachers started to use it and sites like it, I believe that students would be more prepared for what is to come. It is a better and more fun way of learning. If they are learning better from it, then we should use it!

How does using scratch with students as a teacher help you to address the ISTE teaching standards?

Teaching Standard #1
a. Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness

Scratch meets this teaching standard in many ways. There are many projects on it that support and show kids and encourage kids to be creative. They are not only being creative while doing this but they are learning something. They have to think of different ways to do something and pay attention to the directions or else the project will not work. They are given plenty of room for creativity too.

Project on Scratch:
My project
It is working on exponents. When I was learning this in my math classes, I had trouble with exponents and I think something like this would have helped me understand it better.

A CSO that fits my project:

CSO:  M.O.A1.2.4 --develop and test hypotheses to derive  the laws of exponents and use them to perform operations on expressions with integral exponents.

I believe my project fits into this CSO. In my project they are learning how to compute exponents and the different ways to do it. This project will help them understand the difference between the base and the exponent and why both are important parts of integrating an exponent.

How might Scratch help with future students support content area learning?

My project that I found is an example of content area learning. My project is in math. If a teacher just stands in front of the classroom and talks about math and does nothing else, students will become bored and not learn the information as well. If you switch up your lessons and find projects on Scratch, like my exponents one, it can help them to understand that lesson better and have fun while doing it. They will also be more likely to remember it.

Video Games + School = Good Idea? Yes!

Video 1:

Major Claim: In reasonable amounts, video games such as call of duty and others can have a positive and powerful effect on our behavior.

1. Research has showed people that play a lot of video games generally have better eye sight than those that don't play video games. People that don't play video games have about normal eye vision but people that do play have better than normal vision. They can read fine print, like on a medicine jar,  or even see better in the fog.
2. The average adult has an attention span of about 3-4 objects at a time, but someone that plays video games has an attention span of about 6-7 objects at a time. The areas of the brain that control attention are much more efficient in those that play video games. People that play video games are able to go back and forth from a task quickly, which means they can multi task better.
3. Just like wine, when drank in certain amounts and at the right age, it can be very good for you. Same with video games, if played at the right age and the right amount can be very good for you. They are trying to research and do training to make educational video games to use in schools. They want to use video games to have long lasting effects on students.

Video 2:

Major Claim: Things have changed over time, kids can relate more to video games and they catch their attention and interest but the world isn't catching up with video games. Kids have trouble paying attention because while video games have developed, the world around them is stuck in the same place.

1. Kids have to have an amazing ability to multi task to play video games now days. They have to be able to chat, text, control characters, know where their going, and deal with getting interrupted. Things like that actually make you smarter. The act of learning produces more brain matter. A study at Harvard was done, about 5 things that can help you become smarter. Those 5 things are all components of video games. Thinking creatively, challenging yourself, and doing things the hard way. People have to do those things when they play video games.
2. People are getting smarter in the US. It started rising in the 1990s about the same time that video games started to become popular. The pleasure of playing a video and beating it, produces a chemical called dopamine that makes you want to continue to play it.
3. A teacher took a class that was below a 3rd grade reading level and gave them a gaming system and had them do reading and math activities on it and by the end they were on a 4th grade reading level. If you tell them learning is fun, they will start to believe it. Use video games as a type of training don't completely lean on them for everything. If you take something negative and turn it into something positive it will help.
4. With video games, you can teach kids to work together. They want to win so they will work together. The video games can grade them on how they work together. Regular exercises cannot really do that because it all boils down to how the individual does so they act differently.

Video 3:

Major Claim: Play is an important part of peoples development. Playing is one of the important ways that kids learn. Games get at the kind of social practices and learning experiences that they need in the 21st century. Teamwork, problem solving, and the ability to take on identities. Very forgiving environments for kids to fail in, which we need more of.

1. Video games work in the same way that good teachers work. There is a clear sense of challenge for the player and student, you are giving and figuring out different types of instruction. Game designers are always thinking about what does the person need to know now to be able to do the next task. The teachers do the same thing.
2. It is hard to see the learning going on in video games because people are not trained to see it. The first reaction when you see someone playing a video game is their just wasting time, but if you sit down with them and ask them what they are doing, they will give you a very detailed narrative and they will use good vocabulary. Teachers should think of video games as one part of a larger learning experience, and how can they connect that to reading a book or working on a paper.
3. Video games cause kids to think about who is on the other side. There is also a sense of empowerment and drive to want to beat the game. They watch other kids do it, and they can see themselves in other kids and believe that they too can do it.
4. It provides a lot of social structure. The more social structure, the better kids learn. Parents supporting their kids is helpful in kids learning. When the teacher and parents get involved, they can talk to the kids and see and hear what they are doing. Not only the kids are learning but the teachers and adults are too.

My thoughts:

Before I watched these videos, I believed that video games were very bad for you. I believed in all of the myths that are going around about them. After I watched the videos, I believe that video games should be used to help kids learn. In the first video, it said it can increase your attention span. I believe that it is extremely important to widen your attention span. A greater attention span can help in a lot of aspects in life. With all the multi tasking we have to do, video games is making that easier. In the second video it talked about how video games help kids to work together. With the world we live in now, that is an extremely important skill to have. They need to be able to work well with colleagues and students. Video games can help develop that better than a lot of other things. I think another reason that video games are so important is that, they make you think about who is on the other side. I believe that, that is also an important skill to have. In the working world, you have to think about how to handle certain situations based on who and what you are dealing with. They can learn to put themselves in someone else's shoes and think about how that person would react. Overall, I believe that we should start putting video games into school systems. The results are amazing and it can change the way our kids are learning and help them develop new skills.

Article Supporting Video games in schools Click Here
This article is talking about how about video games would be extremely useful in schools. It would open up learning opportunities and make learning fun. Kids like playing games so if they can combine that with school , they will want to learn and it will stay with them longer. It gives them a new way to think that will be useful in life.

Picasso Head + my opinion on learning styles

My multiple test intelligence test showed I was mostly interpersonal. I think my picture reflects this because my eyes are closed, meaning I keep to myself. My ears are small and not very open, showing that I think to spend time and work better by myself. my mouth is closed and my hair is simple. I think that shows that I don't really talk a lot and I am a very simple person. There is no color, which I think means that I am not extremely outgoing and only have a few friends I talk to.

Activities that I would enjoy because I am more interpersonal:

Practice breathing for relaxation.

Work on the computer.

Set aside time to reflect on new ideas and information.
 Go on "guided imagery" tours
Article 1

Article 2

My Opinion:

I think that learning styles and Multiple Intelligence complement each other. I think it is important to consider both but not have too much of either one of them. I will use the concept of learning styles in my classroom. I will think about different ways to do different activities. I will try to find activities that fit different personalities. I believe that having a range of ideas is important in the classroom. Kids need different ways to learn and relate to what they are doing. If they are able to relate to it and have fun with it, and its not the same thing every day, they will most likely remember it in the long run. It will not just disappear after they take a test. I like this quotes, " teachers should worry about matching their instruction to the content they are teaching. Some concepts are best taught through hands-on work, some are best taught through lectures, and some are best taught through group discussions. " (Clark, 2000). I feel like it describes how I feel about learning styles. I don't think teachers should think about how many of my students learn what way. That doesn't really do anything. It should be more based off of what teaching technique is best for this activity. I also agree with another quote that I found, " That is, most researchers agree that we do have various learning styles and preferences, however, the research tends to agree that it is relative unimportant when designing learning programs. Rather it is far more important to match the presentation with the nature of the subject, such as providing correct learning methods, strategies, and context; rather than matching individual preferences" (Glenn, 2009) This quote is saying that we should not create activities for certain learning styles specifically but we should think of different ways to create learning styles and how it fits with that activity. We need to consider the content of the activity and how it would best be presented, and not worry about how each individual learns best.

My MI:
I have more interpersonal intelligence. Using blogs, journals, internet research, group projects and concept maps I can relate and plan activities that use these things. I can take these ideas and activities and incorporate the lesson into these kinds of things. Students that have interpersonal intelligence with most likely really enjoy these activities.

The lesson plan.- This lesson plan will help people with interpersonal intelligence. It is a group project. They will get to work together with a group on a geometry assignment, they can learn to become a better leader because that is what the most likely naturally want to do, is lead. They will excel and enjoy this kind of project, because they are most comfortable leading a group of people.

Learning styles

Learning styles don't exist....Video

1. Its not really three ways to learn but it is more of a way to store information.
2. The tests that they perform are not right because you are asking them to remember the meaning not the visual and the listening part of it.
3. When something is explained most people already believe this theory so that relate it to that, "that's the reason they understood it".
4. Teachers should not plan there lessons around the learning styles but by the child's personality and what motivates them.

Multiple Intelligence ..... video

1.  If they don't use the learning styles that fits that student best, it the long run they wont remember the information.
2. School systems don't incorporate the different learning styles so it is not fair for all students.
3. teachers should always be asking themselves am I reaching every student and is there something else I can do to help them learn?
4. Students don't need to graduate with all this random information but things that will stick with them and they will use after graduating.

How are they different and similar?

Learning styles are different from multiple intelligence because learning style is just focusing on one area of how someone learns. Multiple intelligence is incorporating their interests and areas that they are better in and combining them with others areas that they might not be good at.
, these two theories are connected by means of learning strategies. These strategies serve as enablers that help learners learn with perceptual strengths. At the same time, they provide a favorable environment that allows learners to engage intuitively their unique blend of multiple intelligences. When concept mapping and mental imagery are used as learning strategies to accommodate visual and auditory learners, spatial and linguistic intelligences can be expected to be involved due to the common characteristics these forms of intelligences share with visual and auditory learning styles.

My Math Lesson Plan

M.O.A1.2.14 under algebra 1:
they have to understand the
definitions of these things
before they can apply them.
choose the most efficient method to solve quadratic equations by
  • graphing (with and without technology),
  • factoring
  • quadratic formula
After they complete this activity : they will be able to recite and apply the definitions shown and be able to solve problems and understand which methods to use.

Teaching Standard 2:

d. Provide students with multiple and varied formative

and summative assessments aligned with content

and technology standards and use resulting data

to inform learning and teaching

My lesson planThis lesson plan will help students lean to verify claims made in the media that use numbers.

Obama Photo Blog

My worksheet

I believe this picture best shows Obama's leadership abilities. This picture shows that Obama is confident in what is going on. His face looks happier so he might think that everything is going to be okay. He is sitting up straight, which relays confidence. His hands look almost like he is directing something. He looks like he knows what he is talking about. He is dressed nice and he is in a more formal setting.
My new Caption: Obama is unsure of what will happen in the future and what he will make of the oil spill.

Think Aloud

Standard two: Design and Develop Digital Age Learning
Experiences and Assessments
c. Customize and personalize learning activities
to address students’ diverse learning styles,
working strategies, and abilities using digital tools
and resources
I can see myself in the future using projects like these to teach kids. It is a hands on way to learn and it is less boring for them and they are more likely to remember it in the long run. They will learn to use technology to do different projects. They can learn to use different tools like jing and power point and different websites to create fun things. They are able to personalize it and have fun with it while they are learning. If they are having a problem with a certain thing or certain section they can look up YouTube videos and websites to help them understand it better.Even though I am going to be a math teacher i can use it to help them understand certain math problems or practice with different ones or even try and teach a lesson through something like this. They can take pictures using jing to visualize the problems and then write out explanation for them.

Think Aloud Questions

My website. I  changed it, because it was not that biased and mostly everything was correct. I wanted to really be able to show the steps when doing the power point.
    • What facts has the author omitted?
    •
    •
    •
    • He didn't talk about why the governor of Texas would put guns in the schools. Because he does not believe that guns should be in schools, he automatically started talking about how the governor of Texas didn't know what he was doing. I wish I were surprised that Texas Gov. Rick Perry doesn't see a problem with concealed weapons in schools, but after watching his failed bid for the presidency, the truth is there's very little that man can say that will truly surprise me.
  • In a country with fewer than 350 million people but more than 310 million guns. When I researched and looked this up, he said there were more guns than there are and the same amount of people that there are to try and make it seem like we have too many guns and too little people.
  • What additional information is necessary?
  • This is one of the quotes that come from the article. I'm not anti-gun -- I have one in my house. But I ask you: What kind of people feel the need to have a gun with them in church? I'll tell you what kind: The kind who probably shouldn't have one in the first place. He is very biased towards not wanting teachers to be allowed to have guns. He gives a lot of examples of when people allowed to have guns shot innocent people, sometimes by accident. He was trying to prove that having guns isn't really going to stop anything.
  • It just doesn't make sense. Having police patrol the area during school hours is fine. But allowing guns in school is simply counterintuitive to the kind of civilized society we want to live in and represent to the rest of the world. He also gives facts that only help his cause. He takes some of the facts and makes them sound better or worse than they are, to help his cause ( like I showed above).

  • What words create positive or negative impressions? There were times when they created both:
    • What is the author's political point of view? He is not really a fan of either side.
    • What does the author stand to gain? He wants to make sure teachers do not have guns in school. He believes that he is protecting the students by doing this and that is his goal in writing this article.
    • Who is paying for the website? CNN
    • Does the author present alternate points of view?
      • If so, are those views presented objectively, or with scorn?
    • A majority of the time, he sends talking about how teachers should not have guns in school. He thinks it is a terrible idea and he presents he ideas based off of that. He does present the other side but in a very negative way. He bashes a lot on the governor of Texas, who just allowed for teachers to have guns.

What I learned about Wiki

I learned that the people editing the Wiki pages, for the most part are reliable people. They enjoy what they are doing and have a lot of knowledge on it. They are honest and factual when posting information. They also have a lot of experience with using Wiki and they do a good job creating articles. The research we have done with Wiki has made me realize that Wiki can be a good, positive source. It is not all unreliable, you just have to check and make sure it seems okay. Also make sure it is not your only source!

Do we have a positive attitude?

"Spell-check, along with online search engines, may be convincing us that devoting energy to honing spelling skills is anachronistic."  I strongly agree with this statement.

I believe that spell check and autocorrect is hurting the worlds ability to spell. When you type something in the search engine, most of time it will still find what you are looking for. So why bother remembering how to spell it? Or when you are typing a paper and you misspell a word. Most times it will underline in red and help you fix it. As long as you can get close to what you are trying to spell, then how cares if you know how to spell it? Wrong. It is very important for people to learn how to spell, and while I think autocorrect and spell check can be good they can also be very damaging. From personal experience I know that I am not a good speller and these things have made it worse for me. I don't bother to remember how to spell a word if Google or Microsoft will help me again later.

Here is someone that agrees.

"whatever the benefits quote"
I strongly disagree with this statement. I believe that it helps. It does so many positive things for children and aids in learning. It is not damaging for the kids learning.

My mathematical induction of the future

My reaction to the future of work video:

I dont like the fact that work is almost become a persons house and everything depends on your work.

Location in the future wont matter, we can communicate with people halfway across the world at home. I believe that is a good thing for families, and will help familes grow closer together.

College is the new high school. This statement didnt really surpirse me but I strongly agree with it. It also said it is not okay if you dont how to do something. I think that that is crazy and it is not right. There are going to be things in life that peeople have trouble with not every one is perfect.

How did my educational background help with my future job?
I took computer classes to help me know how to use different sites to help with my school work. My math teachers showed me websites to help me with problems that I was having trouble with. I was shown different activies to help me with teaching in the future. I was teach that nothing is free in life, and I have to earn everything I do. I believe that is an important thing to know.
